Design Manager

Job description

Johnson Controls is hiring a Mechanical Design Manager for Modular Central Utility Plant (mCUP) projects in Dubai. The role manages and coordinates mechanical design and engineering for packaged chiller plants, pumping systems, cooling tower systems, utility and chiller skids and piping modules, across the full design lifecycle from tender review to commissioning support.

You will convert customer P&IDs, layouts and specifications into compliant, constructible and production-ready deliverables, coordinating design across multiple manufacturing facilities and working closely with Sales, Estimation, Controls, Procurement, Quality, Manufacturing, Project Management and Site teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate mechanical design for mCUP systems, packaged chiller plants, utility skids, cooling tower and pumping systems and piping modules
• Review customer tender documents including P&IDs, layouts, specifications and scope documents
• Translate tender information into design concepts, equipment arrangements, plant and piping layouts and detailed engineering deliverables
• Develop and review P&IDs, mechanical layouts, general arrangement and piping drawings and design documentation
• Perform and review hydraulic, pipe sizing, pressure-drop and pump-head calculations for design validation and customer approval
• Prepare and review drawings, calculations and technical data for customer and consultant submission, and resolve review comments
• Create and review manufacturing, fabrication, assembly, spool, module and installation drawings
• Coordinate design standards and deliverables across multiple manufacturing facilities
• Lead mechanical BIM coordination, model reviews and clash detection with other disciplines
• Provide engineering support for installation, testing and commissioning, and update drawings to final installed conditions
• Support Sales, Estimation and Project teams with technical solutions and design inputs for costing and scheduling
• Plan design deliverables against project milestones, run design reviews and promote standardisation and continuous improvement

Requirements

• Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline
• Substantial experience in district cooling plants, packaged chiller plants, modular central utility plants, utility skids, cooling tower systems, pumping systems or comparable industrial mechanical systems
• Experience across concept design, detailed engineering, customer approval, BIM coordination, fabrication support, installation, testing and commissioning support
• Hands-on experience preparing and reviewing P&IDs, plant layouts, mechanical calculations, submittals, fabrication drawings and installation documentation
• Experience coordinating engineering deliverables across more than one manufacturing facility or distributed project team is strongly preferred
• Experience supporting Sales, Estimation, Procurement, Quality, Manufacturing and Site teams in an engineered-to-order environment is preferred
• Knowledge of mechanical, piping, pressure-testing, fabrication, quality and safety standards for modular plant projects
